NORTH KOREAN REFUGEE STORIES

“On My Way to Meet You”
This is a weekly South Korean television show, and is popular in both South Korean and China. It features a different small group of about 10 women who are North Korean defectors. Though the show begins with fun and frivolity, the audience then experiences the horrific stories of brutality and the life experiences of living in North Korea. Get a glimpse into North Korea, hear the stories of defectors, and come away with new understandings and experiences. This video “brings to life the darkest truths” of a country of which we know little.
“My Escape from North Korea"
What is the experience of North Korean defectors and what happens to family members when a person defects? This first-person story, told on the TED Talk stage, gives a glimpse into the life of defectors. Her personal story provides education of what happens in North Korea, the journey through China and into Laos, and the challenges of arriving in South Korea.

Educational

Jack Rendler Interview – North Korean Resettlement
Midwest Alliance for North Korean Refugees sponsored a Symposium at the University of MN – Humphrey Institute in 2016. Jack Rendler, International human rights activist and North Korea Country Specialist from Amnesty International, was the keynote speaker. This interview, which followed his presentation, educates viewers about the number of North Koreans settled in different areas of the world, what questions need to be asked about resettlement, and a working definition of human rights.

This is a video for those who want to hear from someone who has been working this area for years and has an understanding of what it would mean to engage in resettlement.
